Join us for Research Friday events in the UmArts Research Studio next door to Curiosum.

Starting with talks and a workshop detecting the electromagnestic spectrum. The workshop will explore how we sense and work within high frequency and low frequency radiation, from visible light, to ionising radiation and radiowaves. Moderated by Ylva Fernaues, Assoc Prof of Design at UID.

Photon Researcher Katharina Wulff investigates human responses to daylight in a highly seasonal world here in Västerbotten, revealing physiological connections where daylight sets our visual sensitivity, orchestrates our brain and body clocks and determines sleep timing and mental wellbeing. Her workshop will explore visible light and how our eyes see: creating rainbows, finding blind-spots, creating optical illusions.

Ele Carpenter investigates art and nuclear culture. Today she will introduce her artwork Laboratory for Variable Risk Perception to make visible high frequency radiation in domestic uranium glassware using Ultra Violet light and a radiation monitor.

Rob Collins PhD candidate at Umeå Institute of Design, is a maker and design researcher who will be experimenting with sound frequencies which can be heard differently by children and adults. As sound frequency increases and becomes inaudible to humans it can still be picked up by a radio, and other sensing devices.

AI Jam Session 17-20.00

Come and join our UmArts researchers synthesizer jam session led by musican Göran Wretling, with artists Daniel Shanken, Cyanne van Den Houten and Ymer Marinus. Experimenting with analgoue and digital instruments, AI, audio-visual touch interfaces, hybrid mixes and more. Göran is a musican and lecturer at the Department of Creative Studies in Education; Daniel is an artist and postdoctoral researcher in Art and AI with UmArts and Umeå School of Architecture.
