Relate North: Beyond Borders Conference at Umeå University, 2023

The Arctic Sustainable Art & Design (ASAD) 2023 conference ‘Relate North: Beyond Borders’ is hosted by the Department of Creative Studies and UmArts 13 – 17 November 2023. The conference will take place at the Department of Creative Studies (Teacher Education building) on the main campus for most of the week, except for Wednesday 15 November in the afternoon when activities will take place on the Arts Campus at the UmArts Research Studio, Umeå School of Architecture and Bildmuseet.

UmArts is supporting arts researchers undertaking Small Visionary Projects to contribute to the Relate North conference in several ways on 15 November:

Cindy Kohtala, Professor of Design for Sustainability at UID and Fatemeh Morandi, Informatics, will chair a panel discussion on Digital Fabrication and Sustainability: Beyond the Borders of Art, Design and Craft with Annamari Manninen and Sara Rylander, taking place at Umeå School of Architecture.

The UmArts Research Studio will present Alejandro Haiek Coll’s research project The Collaborative Arctic-Nordic Atlas: A critical cartography on environmental (in)justice which aims to collate and visualize data related to social and environmental injustice from a spatial perspective. The project will then evolve over the next few weeks providing opportunities to engage researchers and students in different ways.

In the evening Anders Lind will present his work Flashlight orchestra in the Höstljus (Autumn light installations) in the centre of Umeå.
